Dave´s idea on Waxing & Polishing

You pre treated your car and gave it it´s bath. Now it is time to really finish the job and get that showroom shine. This means you are going to use some elbow grease and and will be deploying waxes & polishes to achieve that looked after finish.

Waxes & Polishes serve several distinctive purposes. The first one, very simple, is cleaning a car´s finish. The second one, could it be any more obvious, is a to improve the overall shine of the body work. The last one is to protect the whole surface against a wide variety of malevolent factors. The biggest one being Mother Nature herself.

All waxes & polishes contain (mild) abrasives, chemical cleaning agents, lubricants and waxes. But not all waxes & polishes have an equal amount of these ingredients. Moreover, there is an extremely wide variety of usefull abrasives so you better watch out which wax/polish is up to the job you are working on. Not all will give you the same result. Otherwise said, use a different wax/polish and you will end up with a different finish.

That being said it is safe to say that the abrasive is the workhorse in the potion that will remove the surface oxidation while leaving behind a high gloss shine.

Be sure to never, ever apply wax/polish in direct sun nor on a body that is hot to the touch. Removing the wax/polish residue will prove to be very hard.

Other points to take into account are :

Always make sure to apply the wax/polish in thin layers and work in immediately. It is better to apply several light coats instead of trying to work a heavy one in.

Only wax a car that has been thoroughly cleaned before. There is no since in using make up when the lady was dragged through the mud. Get it!

Do not apply wax/polish on surfaces that cannot be buffed. It will be a bitch to get it off.

Keep an eye on the weather. The best temperature to get this job done is in between 15 and 25 Celsius.

Better use soft cotton or even microfiber cloth to achieve the best results.
